Holiday Cacti: Easter Cactus, Flowers And Plants

There are many types of flowers and plants people come to expect to see during different holidays. For instance, the beautiful, deep red Poinsettias are associated with the Christmas holiday, just as lilies are associated with the Easter holiday. However, there are also a variety of holiday cacti many people await to bloom during specific holidays. One of these cacti is the Easter cactus.

The Easter cactus is also known to botanists as the Rhipsalidopsis gaertneri. Native to the country Brazil, this type of cacti are considered jungle cacti. This cactus can be identified by its striking flowers, and curved or scalloped leaves. The flowers of this cacti tend to bloom once a year, during the month of April, hence the name. Typically, the flowers of the Easter cactus are a pinkish-red color with yellow anthers. However, the cactus flowers can be found in nearly 50 different types.

In order for the Easter cactus to flourish, it must be planted under very specific conditions. First of all, the the cactus requires specific needs in regards to lighting. These cactus plants are more likely to survive and bloom when they receive bright, yet indirect sunlight. One way to ensure these cactus plants are receiving just the right amount of sunlight is by placing them either under a shady tree in the lawn, or under some large, leafy shrubbery. The Easter cactus also responds when receiving specific amounts of water. If the cactus is over watered, chances are the flowers will not bloom.

Therefore, it is best to simply water the Easter cactus to the point in which the soil is damp, rather than water logged. If the cactus does receive more water than needed, there can be dire consequences. When over watered, the roots of the cactus can begin to rot, which can also lead to the growth of moss and fly maggots. One way to prevent this from happening is by using a potting soil rich in peat, in order to promote the draining of excess water. One of the benefits of growing the Easter cactus is the low maintenance required when repotting the cactus plants. Usually, the Easter cactus only needs to be repotted once every two to three years.

One popular type of the Easter cactus is the Rose Easter cactus, which is also known as Rhipsalidopsis rosea. This holiday cacti can best be described as a smaller version of the traditional Easter cactus, which possesses petite, pink cactus flowers. Although quite beautiful, this type of cacti may be more difficult to grow than other types of Easter cactus. The Rose Easter cactus is well known for loosing stem pieces if its environment is not up to par.

Once the snow begins to melt and it is clear spring is just around the corner, try celebrating the Easter season surrounded by the beautiful cactus flowers of the Easter cactus. This cacti could be a great alternative to the traditional Easter lilies.
