Holiday Cacti: Thanksgiving Cactus Plants And Cactus Flowers

When people hear the word cactus, an image of a large, prickly desert specimen comes to mind. What many people do not realize, however, is cacti come in many different shapes, sizes and varieties. For manageable and beautiful cacti, holiday cacti are a great choice. Although the Christmas cactus is probably the most popular variety, the Easter cactus and Thanksgiving cactus are also good options.
One difference between these varieties can be found by observing the cacti leaves. For example, the Thanksgiving cactus has serrated leaves. The similarities between the cacti allow them to be treated similarly.
Horticulturists and plant enthusiasts may know the Thanksgiving cactus by its Latin name, Zygocactus. It originates from the jungles of Central and South American. Because it is a jungle cactus and not a desert cactus; the Thanksgiving cactus needs rain or to be watered almost daily. Desert cactus plants are designed to store moisture and can survive long periods of time without rain or watering. The Thanksgiving cactus should be planted in highly organic, well-draining soil. It needs some sun, but full sunlight during the summer months should be avoided.
To induce a bloom period, people should only water their Thanksgiving cactus sparingly during September and October. These are the months when the days begin to shorten. The decreased sunlight and water result in budding and blossoming. Cactus flowers can be quite beautiful in vibrant shades of color. It seems the Thanksgiving cactus received its name by the time the cactus flowers bloom: November. Occasionally, a Thanksgiving cactus may experience a bud blast; the falling off of buds before they get a chance to bloom. A few things can be done to avoid this disappointing occurrence. The cactus should be kept away from wind, such as air from vents. They should also be kept away from ethylene gas, which accompanies plastics, propane heaters and ripening fruit. In general, cacti grow best with light shade. Holiday cacti that are not taken care of properly may become weak. If this happens, the plants' fragile joints can break off.
The Thanksgiving cactus is an annual and, if cared for per these instructions, can flourish for many years. With a general knowledge of cacti, the Thanksgiving cactus is a relatively low-maintenance plant. It is a great present to bring around Thanksgiving. Likewise, other holiday cactus plants are thoughtful presentations for their respective holidays, as well.
